- Early discovery: The concept of reverse osmosis (RO) dates to 1748, when French physicist Jean Antoine Nollet first observed water molecules diffusing naturally through a semi-permeable membrane — a pig's bladder. - Origins of the modern technology: Not until the 1940s, as American interest in seawater desalination revived, did reverse osmosis move towards practical use.
