  • No effect on non-microbial contaminants: UV does nothing for heavy metals (such as lead and copper), organics or suspended matter — that falls to an RO membrane (heavy metals) or activated carbon (organics). Some special ion exchange resins can remove heavy metals, but an RO membrane is the more complete answer.
  • Wants clear water: turbid or coloured water blocks UV penetration and weakens disinfection — pre-filtration is needed.
  • Depends on electricity: UV needs stable power, so it does not suit off-grid outdoor use.
